“HIB helped me a lot when I first started trying to learn to surf. Through their patience and effort I was able to get it down. Since then I have been surfing on my own for about 2 years and have never had more fun!”

Hatteras Island is the top surfing destination on the East Coast. Surfers from all over the world come to the Outer Banks to surf the numerous uncrowded beachbreaks that cover over a 50 mile stretch of coastline. What attracts so many to make the trip to Hatteras Island is the consistency and quality of the waves. These qualities are also why the Eastern Surfing Association holds its championships every year at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. With competitiors coming from the entire east coast to surf what many would agree are the best waves along the entire eastern seaboard.
“Surfing with HIB was the best! We learned how to surf, and had a freaking awesome time doing it. The surf instructors at HIB are awesome, they know what they’re doing and how to explain it to beginners! We highly recommend it and we’ll definately be back!”
-Emily & Kathleen ~ New Jersey
Hatteras Island Boardsports is the #1 location on Hatteras Island to take a surf lesson plain and simple! Our instructors are surfers who know what it takes through years of experience. There are many places to have a lesson but only one place to become a surfer.
Why Should I Take a Surf Lesson at HIB?
We are a Surf Shop – we don’t rent baby carriages or bed linens and we don’t try to be masters of windsurfing, kiteboarding, or basket weaving. Let’s face it surfing isn’t easy and to get good takes years of practice and a lot of trial and error but it is entirely possible to get the basics down in just a few short hours with proper instruction. Lessons are about the students – you surf – NOT the instructor. We do one thing and we do it well. You can buy bread at a supermarket where you get all your other food but isn’t the bread at the specialty baker so much better?!!
What’s Included?
Surfing lessons at HIB are 2 hours long and include beach instruction but most of the time will be spent in the water. We will provide you with a board to use during the lesson and if the water is a little cold for you we’ll set you up with a wetsuit as well for no additional charge! All you have to do is get a good night sleep the night before, get your swimsuit on, put on a little sunscreen and show up ready for a great time!
Group Lessons – $60 per person
Group lessons are two hours of fun with our expert instructors. Bring your own group or we will place you with other people looking for group lessons. Only 3 people are needed to form a group, and with a maximum of 5 per group each person will receive tons of individual attention. This lesson is ideal for the beginner to intermediate surfer.
Private Lessons – $80 per person
Private lessons are also two hours long, but you will have an intense one on one session with one of our instructors. You also have the option of a 2 or 3 person private lesson – perfect for couples or small groups who want to take a lesson without a mixed group. Private lessons benefit those from the beginner level to advanced levels. So whether you are just learning how to catch a wave or need some more advanced instruction, our instructors can get you to the next level!

Hey,
I’ve already sent an email to reserve 2 surfboards, I am now sending this one to see if it’s necessary to reserve in advance for a lesson. My 10 yrs-old son and I are TOTAL beginners. We would wish to take a group lesson around July 5th or 6th. What happens if we book and weather is bad or there are no waves?
Thanks in advance,
PR
This is a good question Pierre! It is a very good idea to make a reservation at least 2 weeks in advance for lessons in July since this is our busiest month of the year. When you make a reservation you will be asked to make a deposit for your lesson – this deposit is refundable if you 1) cancel your lesson 24 hours or more prior to your scheduled time or 2) if WE cancel the lesson for some reason (lack of waves, unsafe conditions, or thunderstorms) We will make every effort to reschedule lessons that can’t go out at the originally scheduled time but are happy to refund deposits made if it simply can’t go out. Please Note!!! Rain without the presence of thunder and lightning DOES NOT cancel a lesson!! We’re going to be soaking wet as soon as we get in the water so a little rain doesn’t hurt anything! Looking forward to seeing you in June!!

I’m going to be in Avon 7/23-30, and am interested in some private surf lessons (you give them to old men beginners like me, right?). My wife and daughter might want to join me, and if I’m reading the above correctly, that would be OK, right? Please contact me regarding availability of lessons, dates and times. Thanks!
Absolutely Scott! Just give us a ring at the shop and we’ll get you all sorted! If you don’t already have our telephone number you can find it on the “contact us” page – look forward to hearing from you!
